SENIOR PROFESSIONAL NURSE
Provides and implements a Comprehensive Primary Health Care Service for specific Clinics whilst
rendering and monitoring the execution of procedural sequences and requirements and specialised
health care interventions.
Key Responsibility Areas
PROFESSIONAL NURSE
- Renders child health, immunisations, family planning, ante-natal, neonatal, perinatal and
postnatal care, management of medical and surgical emergencies, clinical assessment,
diagnosis and treatment of ailments, illnesses and diseases, nutrition, oral health, eye
testing, pre and post test counselling, health education, health promotion and rehabilitative
services. - Provision of a Primary Health Care function at Clinics
- Coordinates and implements tasks associated with the application of specific health care
techniques and approaches - Providing a comprehensive health care service to women during pregnancy and after
delivery by assessing and determining the health status of both the mother and child
through clinical examinations and essential screening procedures for a range of risk factors,
utilizing applied specialized nursing skills - Co-ordinates and provides a comprehensive communicable disease service
- Providing primary level care for acute and chronic medical illness to adults and children
- Attends to the tasks and activities associated with these screening functions
- Participates in the delivery of health promotion, training and educational programmes on
clinical approaches to safe and healthy living - Undertake community participation and project development in the clinic and surrounding
geographical area as assigned by the Senior Professional Nurse - Orders and maintains adequate stock, supplies, surgical sundries and vaccines to clinics and
processes sterility tests for all clinics. - Manages, co-ordinates, controls and implements tasks necessary for stock requisitions, stock
control and stock maintenance, including pharmaceutical requirements for clinics
SENIOR PROFESSIONAL NURSE
- Operates within the scope of practice as defined by the South African Nursing Council
(Section 38A of the Nursing Act, 1978) pertaining to surgical, medical, obstetric, emergencies
and other life-threatening conditions. - Manages and co-ordinates nursing services within the Primary Health Care Clinic.
- Co-ordinates and implements tasks associated with the application of specific health care
techniques and approaches pertaining to childcare. - Provides a comprehensive health care service to women during pregnancy and after
delivery. - Co-ordinates and provides a comprehensive communicable disease service.
- Provides primary level care for acute and chronic medical illness to adults and children.
- Provides a sexual and reproductive health care service.
- Attends to the tasks/activities for visual, oral and auditory health screening services.
- Participates in the delivery of health promotion, training and educational programmes on
clinical approaches to safe and healthy living. - Undertakes community participation and project development in the clinic and surrounding
geographical area. - Supervises staff, thereby ensuring optimal functioning of comprehensive Primary Health
Care Clinic Services. - Co-ordinates, controls and implements tasks necessary for stock requisitions, stock control
and stock maintenance, including pharmaceutical requirements for clinics.

Essential Requirements
PROFESSIONAL NURSE
- Diploma (NQF Level 6) or equivalent in General Nursing and Midwifery.
- Registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Valid motor vehicle driving license.
- 2 years post professional registration experience in General Nursing and Midwifery.
- Computer Literacy.
SENIOR PROFESSIONAL NURSE
- Diploma (NQF Level 6) or equivalent in General Nursing and Midwifery.
- Registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Valid motor vehicle driving license.
- 3 years post professional registration experience in Primary health Care.
- Computer Literacy.
Preferred Requirements
PROFESSIONAL NURSE
- Degree (NQF Level 7) or equivalent in General Nursing and Midwifery.
- 3 years post professional registration experience in Primary health Care.
SENIOR PROFESSIONAL NURSE
- Diploma (NQF Level 6) in General Nursing and Midwifery.
- Diploma (NQF Level 6) in Clinical Nursing Science, Health Assessment, Treatment, and Care.
- Registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- 4 years post professional registration experience in Primary Health Care.

Job Purpose
To organise, lead, direct, control and coordinate Nursing functions, in order provide quality
comprehensive Primary Health Care services, in accordance with relative health legislation.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Manages and co-ordinates the Nursing service with a Primary Health Care Area.
- Provides a Personal health service together with other Departments both internally and
externally. - Delegates authority and responsibility to subordinates.
- Liaises, interfaces with other departments (internally and externally) and various
organizations and stakeholders. - Attends to correspondence and telephonic enquires, staff problems and crises.
- Deputizes for the Primary Health Care Area Manager.
- Plans, leads, organizes and directs adequate control measures in respect of stocks, supplies,
medicines, equipment and furniture. - Plans, leads, organizes and directs Line Human Resources Management functions.
- General management of all Nursing Services within the Primary Health Care area.
- Interprets and utilizes data in the planning of the Personal Health Services within the
Primary Health care area. - Manages, supervises and coordinates staff within the PHC Area.
- Manages, supervises and coordinates clinical and related programmes at PHC level.
- Monitors and manages the approved Nursing budget, capital and operating.
