Job Purpose
South African Airways (SAA) wants you to join the SAA family as a First Officer.

As a First Officer, you will be expected to take all measures required for the safety of the flight, whether on the ground, or inflight, and be expected to perform the duties of a pilot for South African Airways as either a Second-In-Command Pilot (P2) or Cruise Relief Pilot (P3).

Candidates will be expected to undergo pre-employment assessments which includes checks i.e. criminal, credit, reference, authentication of qualifications etc., simulator / written and psychometric tests.

Qualifications & Experience
Matric Certificate / Grade 12 results / N3 or relevant tertiary qualifications (SAQA accredited)
Compulsory subjects: Mathematics or Statistics 101 and English (D symbol on higher grade or C symbol on standard grade) coupled with one of the following: Physical Science or Computer Science (D symbol on higher grade or C symbol on standard grade)
Valid South African Airline Transport Pilot’s License, or a Commercial Pilot License having completed all the ground subjects for the ATPL (previously known as a Frozen ATPL). A valid ATPL License must be obtained within 4 years from date of employment with SAA with a multi engine instrument rating
Valid Class 1 medical
A minimum of 1,500 flying hours which includes 200 hours on multi-engine aircraft
Be a South African citizen with a valid Passport
Knowledge and Skills
Must have expertise in the application of safety standards and safe operating practices
Detailed knowledge and understanding of national and international aviation regulations such as CAA, ICAO, IATA, FAA, and EASA
Demonstrate a firm understanding of international travel, international customs and practices etc.
Knowledge of all legal regulations for the piloting/aviation profession in the South African and international regulatory environment

Job Purpose
The CEO role reports directly to the South African Airways Board of Directors and is accountable, and responsible, for the safe, efficient, and financial sustainability of the airline’s operations, with direct accountability for all dimensions of the carrier. The CEO develops, implements and oversees the airline strategy, P and L performance, and day to day operations, by leading the near-term transformation of the organisation to return the business to ‘Best in Class’ performance in safety, reliability, cost, and customer satisfaction.

Given the nature of the role, the CEO leads effective liaison programmes with key external constituent groups, including the Shareholder, key stakeholder Ministries (e.g., DPE, Transport), commercial partners, regulators, major suppliers, airport organisations, local community leaders, and the media to ensure that SAA’s interests are co-ordinated with those of such stakeholders.

Furthermore, the CEO is also responsible for the high-quality execution of the Airline Strategy and Corporate Plan, ensuring alignment with business objectives set by the Shareholder and/or the Board of Directors. The CEO must be able to inculcate a zero tolerance safety culture and must be able to make hard decisions leading the development
and sustainability of a culture and structure that is capable of operating efficiently and effectively in a constantly emerging and competitive environment.

In association with the transformational agenda of the airline the CEO will, in particular, focus on key features of the SAA airline regarding revenue growth, fleet and network expansion and alliances, operational efficiencies, customer experience and the digitalisation of the work environment. This role requires a strong strategist to execute turn-around strategies within a fiercely global competitive aviation market and deliver profitable results. The subsidiaries will report to the SAA CEO for administrative purposes and are part of the SAA Exco, but the final accountability is with their boards in line with the Delegation of Authority and Significant and Materiality Framework.
